Peter Pirozzo

 What is your career?
Systems / Software Engineer
How many years have you been on the Cyber Cats?
I was an Adambots mentor 17 years and  Cybercats mentor for 3 years.
What sub-teams are you mentoring?
Mechanical Team
In what way do you and your sub team help the team?
By keeping the design simple yet capable, we try to assure that the robot will be ready when needed, easy to maintain, and easy to operate effectively.
What is FIRST to you?
FIRST was a good way to get my two sons interested in robotics (one now works for google and one works for TARDEC programming autonomous ground vehicles). It is also a way for me to continue to stretch my own engineering skills now that I am retired.
What is your favorite memory so far about robotics?
There are two, the most memorable was when my son David (the one that programs autonomous vehicles) let his hair be painted blue (he was always a reserved person before that 🙂 ). The second one occurs year after year where I see a freshman who does not know which end of the wrench to hold (let alone what a wrench is used for) grow into a team leader by the time she or he becomes a senior and is teaching the freshmen how to use tools.
What do you want to learn this season?
I am an engineer, I ALREADY KNOW EVERYTHING. 🙂 Seriously though, even after over 40 years in Engineering I believe I still have many things to learn, like how to make a 140 pound robot climb a rope.
What are some goals you have for the season?
Try to keep the robot design simple while still functional, listen to everyone’s inputs on the design and try to incorporate design ideas that contribute to a simple yet capable robot.
What are 3 fun facts about you?
I have 4 grandsons & 1 granddaughter (yes that is 5 facts), the oldest grandson (Vincent) is in first grade and a few months ago he took second place in a 3rd grade math competition, 2nd oldest (Matteo is 4) and likes to build 3D printers with his dad, including one that prints pancakes! Emmett is 3 and he loves construction equipment and just got his own bulldozer for Christmas, Finnegan 4 months and Angelina 3 months are just starting to smile and giggle. As for me, I like building robots, but that is not nearly as much fun as playing with my grand-children.
